Playing for a team requires a lot of training, commitment and dedication. For any hockey player in Australia, it also means earning money through paid employment outside hockey then playing at whatever level around work. There are hockey teams representing various Australian emergency services as well as the Australian Defence Force.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) promotes sport for its members as a way to help maintain fitness, teamwork and service promotion. 3 main teams form the Australian Defence Force Ice Hockey Association (ADFIHA) with the top players from each team forming a combined services team. ADFIHA teams play in several tournaments & one-off friendly matches across Australia and overseas. Depending on the tournament, more than one ADFIHA team may be entered. Notably, Army Knights player Cameron Smith was selected to play in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) in 2016, playing for the Sydney Bears.
The 3 teams meet in a Tri-Services tournament. In 2015 & 2016, this tournament was won by the Army Knights. [ADFIHA Facebook]
The 3 service teams are:
- Air Force Eagles
- Army Knights
- Navy Tiger Sharks
Aussie Heat are a combined team from Australian emergency services. Like ADFIHA, Aussie Heat play in one-off games & tournaments around Australia and overseas. [Aussie Heat Facebook]
